Dolphins and Fireworks

Okay, so it's not the Miami Dolphins, but I still found this article interesting. First, I like that is says they're going to "let" the dolphins stay. Really, what's the alternative?

Also, the image in my head of spooked dolphins doing tricks in the air when the fireworks start is pretty funny. Don't get me wrong - I'm on the side of the dolphins. But still, it will be something different to see if they react.

Fred Evans Arrested

The Miami Dolphins' coach Cam Cameron stayed true to his word when he said the matter of Evans' arrest would be taken seriously - Evans was waived less than a week later. NFL players getting arrested is nothing new, but where does this leave the Dolphins' aging defense? No one wants a repeat of last season's dismal record, and Dolphins' fans are losing patience. Hopefully Jason Taylor will step up, but it's not looking great for Miami.

2007 Preseason

The Dolphins open their 2007 preseason schedule by hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars. The game, which takes place on Saturday, August 11, at 7:30 p.m. ET, will be the fifth time in as many seasons that the two clubs have squared off in the preseason. Five days later, on Thursday, August 16, Miami will enter Arrowhead Stadium for the first time since 2002, and the first time in the preseason since 1982, to engage with the Chiefs. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

When the Buccaneers cross the state for a contest at Dolphin Stadium on Saturday, August 25, it will mark the eighth consecutive season and 15th time in the last 17 years that Tampa Bay and Miami have played in the preseason. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. The Dolphins’ final game of the preseason docket will be a trip to New Orleans on Thursday, August 30, at 8:00 p.m. ET.

After shutting downt he New England Patriots' offense last week with a 21-0 win; the Miami Dolphins were shut out yesterday by the Buffalo Bills, 21-0. The loss was huge for the Dolphins because it officially killed any playoff hopes. The Dolphins showed that they had potential to make a push into the playoffs lately by winning 5 of 6 before yesterday's game, but they're slow start to the season, 1-6, really made it an uphill battle for the Dolphins.

Dolphins Blank the Pats

The Miami Dolphins came to play yesterday at Dolphin Stadium. They shut out the perennial Super Bowl contender New England Patriots 21-0. The Dolphins have really turned things around lately winning 5 of their last 6 proving that they are a team to fear in the AFC East. The New York Jets also lost yesterday bringing them to 7-6, which brings Miami back into the thick of things for a wild card spot.

Jaguars Take Advantage of Injuries

The 4 game winning streak of the Miami Dolphins came to an end today, as the Jacksonville Jaguars won 24-10. There were several key injuries on the Dolphins today which may have tipped the scales in the Jaguars' favor. The running game was never there for the Dolphins as they only rushed for 68 yards, while the Jaguars went for 150 yards with Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew having the bulk of the carries. The Dolphins try to get back on track next week as they host the New England Patriots.

Coach Nick Saban doesn't want to talk about it, even though it was very cool as I recall. The Dolphins had been kind of floundering, and then they hit their stride and produced six wins in a row to wrap up the 2005 season. Our current two in a row is not yet of that magnitude, but I have a lot of confidence that we can add at least one more pearl to the string when the Vikings come to town.

Miami’s Surprise for the Bears

Okay, I’ll admit it now. I was a little surprised myself that our Dolphins were the ones to snap the Bears’ perfect record. Plus, we did it at Soldier Field. I don’t think the Bears ever truly believed they would achieve what has only been done once in NFL history – a perfect unbeaten season. (Let’s see, what team was that? Oh, yeah, the Miami Dolphins.) But lots of Chicago fans figured it would happen on the road, say, visiting the New York Giants or New England Patriots.

It almost always feels better to win rather than lose, but this was extra good because it was unexpected, and because the Dolphins now get a few days without being analyzed to death about why their season has not gotten off the ground until now.

I don’t think it will cheer me up, but I think I’ll talk about that other struggling local football team, the Miami Hurricanes. Well, I actually wanted to compliment Brian Costa at the Miami Herald for his insightful assessment of U of Miami’s bowl game prospects. Costa noted that Miami’s recent bowl history includes all of these famous gridiron classics: Peach, Orange, Fiesta, and Rose Bowls.

Then he pointed out that their opportunities for this season may read “more like the Yellow Pages.: Meaning Champs Sports, MCP Computers, or Meineke Car Care Bowls. With that one observation, he managed to convey both what a crummy year this normally dominant football school is having and how cheesy those commercialized bowl game names sound when you say them out loud.

I was right. That didn’t cheer me up.

Saban: It All Comes Down to Execution

Makes me wonder who he's planning to execute first. Maybe the receivers who dropped seven passes Sunday in our 34-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers? Maybe Joey Harrington the next time he throws an interception?

It's not like Green Bay never wins in Miami. It's just that the last time that happened their coach was...Vince Lombardi.

ANDERSON'S TRICEP SURGERY

Well, that's just great. Bennie Anderson's tricep surgery is going to keep him out for the rest of the season. That's the last thing the Miami Dolphins need right now with the pitiful record they have. It also seems that there is some sort of guard "curse". This is the 4th Miami guard injured this season. At least Kendyl Jacox is back. I wish I had sold my NFL Miami Dolphins season tickets. They seem to be the worst team on the East coast.

Miami Dolphins Come So Close

So close, but no cigar for Nick Saban and my Miami Dolphins, as they lost to the Houston Texans 17-15 today. If I were giving out cigars, I'd have one for Chris Chambers, who helped make things that close and almost closer. Chambers caught a TD pass from Daunte Culpepper with just over a minute and a half to go. Then he was in position to grab one from Ronnie Brown, only it got tipped away by the Texans' Mario Williams--I knew there was some reason Houston picked him as the Numero Uno choice in the draft. Williams also got his first NFL sack tdoay; we'll need to keep an eye on this guy.

Well, it's back to AFC East competition next week, when we head to Gillette Stadium to go after the New England Patriots. The Pats looked pretty good (as in 38-13) against the Cincinnati Bengals today. I think we can at least keep it closer than that, right Miami?

The article I read claims he will bring us some much needed speed on the return team and at wide receiver. I’ve never seen him play so I have no idea what to think about this move by the Dolphins. Miami Heat Too Hot for Dallas

It's a safe bet that tonight the citizens of Miami are thinking more about basketball than football--we could clinch the NBA championship for the first time ever. And if we don't do it during Game 6, there would still be a Game 7. But I want it to happen tonight for two reasons: one, we've got the momentum coming off of that wild Game 5 that ended 101-100, and two, enough about basketball already: this is June and time to start thinking about that opening game with the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 12th. Not to mention our *real* opening game September 7th at the home of the current NFL champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ricky Williams has fled to Canada!

Ricky Williams is playing in the CFL in the off season and has signed a deal that the Miami Dolphins can barely accept. He promises to return to the Dolphins despite his playing in the CFL on a one year contract that makes him the highest paid running back in the CFL. There is reason for concern because Ricky could be injured during play in the CFL or even wear himself out before his expiration date and render his NFL career less valuable by far than it is with him saving himself for play in the NFL only.

The Miami Dolphins have the right to be upset because Ricky Williams has made assurances and promises and has turned his back on those in the past. Also, he can really get himself in trouble with drugs again considering they are legal in certain places in Canada. He’ll never come back!

The Miami Dolphins are boasting a host of great draft choices. New Dolphins Rodrique Wright, Devin Aromashodu, Fred Evans, Jason Allen, Derek Hagan, and Joe Toledo will all be seen on the filed soon enough. Personally I can’t wait to see how this team improves in 2006.

Scott Linehan has left the Miami Dolphins to be the Head Coach of the St, Louis Rams. He was our defensive coordinator and some would argue he was not the best we’ve had. On a positive note Miami residents have one more year to save up for Super Bowl tickets and I am sure next year’s championship will be quite a bit warmer at Dolphins Stadium in Miami than this year’s game at Ford Field in Detroit.

Bryan Wiedmeier has been named the Miami Dolphins President and Chief Operating Officer. The Dolphins Stadium scoreboard is set to be reconstructed into a large HD video monitor and we are the first to make the change and offer the same HD technology that fans have at home. This has been a busy week for the Dolphins and to top it off we have signed veteran wide receiver Teyo Johnson. Johnson had spent the past few years with Oakland and Arizona playing in most of their regular season games. He comes from Stanford where he played wide receiver and was a starter on their basketball team as well.

For Nick Saban’s first year to coach the Miami Dolphins we didn’t do that bad. In fact we did quite well winning six in a row to end the season. We didn’t make the playoffs but we can hope for better things in Saban’s second season of coaching the Dolphins. The Miami Dolphins ended the season with a win over the New England Patriots. The Patriots scored a touchdown in the last minutes and tried for the two-point conversion, but the pass fell incomplete and the Dolphins were victorious ending the season second in their division by one game.

The Miami Dolphins are approaching the season’s end on a five game winning streak. Their latest win over the Tennessee Titans was an exceptional example of the talent and spirit this team has consistently shown since the end of November. The Dolphins gained the AFC’s longest winning streak and their highest rushing total of the year. Miami faces the New England Patriots next week and lost to them once this season already. Hopefully they can perform flawlessly keep the November loss from breaking their positive stride of the past five games.

We have three players going to the Pro Bowl this year. Linebacker Zach Thomas and defensive end Jason Taylor will be going again, and wide receiver Chris Chambers will be headed there for his first time ever. After the last four wins, fans have been very happy with this Miami Dolphins team and are waiting in nervous anticipation for our games against the Tennessee Titans and the New England Patriots. Both are teams we have the ability to dominate. The Patriots beat us earlier in the season but hopefully our players can get past that and play like we know they can after this beautiful winning streak.

Frerotte and Chambers Shock Chargers

The Dolphins defeat of the Chargers came at a bad time for San Diego. They needed the win to have a chance at going to the Playoffs and couldn’t reach the goal. We are now in the running for the AFC East title and may have a chance if we continue to play like we have been. This is the Miami Dolphins third win in a row and it was all thanks to two players. Gus Frerotte passed to Chris Chambers for two touchdowns in the third quarter. Chambers had eight catches for a total of 121 yards of offense and Frerotte completed more than half of his passes for 229 yards.

Dolphins Pull Out a Fourth Quarter Win

The Miami Dolphins really got some payback in their 24-23 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Things were looking desolate after the first quarter with the Bills up 21-0. The Dolphins looked defeated and there really was no reason for the fans to think they could come back from a deficit like that. Coach Nick Saban must have said something right in the locker room at the half, because a different team came onto the field for the third quarter. The Dolphins stopped making mistakes and made some big plays against the dwindling Bills defense. Miami never lost their cool and pulled out the win in the final seconds of the game.

Raiders Sunk by Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins shined in their game against the Oakland Raiders beating them 33-21. This win represents our best offensive effort since our first regular season game with the Denver Broncos. Vonnie Holiday sacked Oakland’s quarterback Kerry Collins three times and Ricky Williams went 34 yards for a touchdown in the final four minutes of the game. Great plays like these were a common occurrence in this game and it almost felt like we were a better team than our record reflects. Everyone knows that is true, however we have to work our defense before anything really big can happen for us.

Injuries Plague Losing Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins had their seventh loss against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday and the season is looking lost for good. We have won the last six games against the Browns so it is no surprise they came into this game ready to make big plays. With Zach Thomas out with a shoulder injury our defense was weakened. We were kept to 67 yards passing because Frerotte was playing injured and Sage Rosenfels started the game but was benched after throwing 2 interceptions and only completing half of his passes. I hate to dwell on the negative but we just don’t have a cohesive structure on offense and we aren’t playing well as a team. It is time to focus on Oakland though and with their record we have a good chance of pulling off a win if we have more healthy players to work with by next week.

Patriots Win over Dolphins

Sunday night’s game against the New England Patriots carried with it a heavy price. Gus Frerotte injured his right index finger and is listed as questionable for our game against the Cleveland Browns. We had a chance in the last quarter to score again but Frerotte’s fourth-down pass went incomplete and became a crucial turnover. The Patriots defense was impenetrable, fast and just too effective against the run and the pass. Tom Brady was the star that night completing two touchdown passes to Benjamin Watson and throwing for just under 300 yards. Hopefully we can do something about this 3-6 record.

The Miami Dolphins came out ahead of the Carolina Panthers with a 27-24 victory. The Dolphins are looking good for the first time in awhile. The next week is their bye week, so that will get them rested for their next game against Buffalo Bills in Buffalo. The Dolphins will not be at home for three weeks, but then they’ve got to come home and face the Kansas City Chiefs. This is going to be a long three weeks for the Miami Dolphins, but at least they have a chance to make some Ws on the road this year.

Miami Dolphins winning over the Denver Broncos 34-10, the Dolphins rushing 33 times and having 151 total rushing yards makes it seem that the Miami Dolphins were just pounding the ball. You have to feel bad for the Denver Broncos losing 2 players to injuries, of which Champ Bailey might be out for the season with a shoulder injury. The Miami Dolphins look better this year than seasons in the past, giving them a hope for the wild card! Gus Frerotte having 275 passing yards leaving him fifth for the opener. Opening day is the most important game to win--the first game the teams play usually determines your season, and if it does, the Miami Dolphins are looking great. Their next game is against the New York Jets at the Meadowlands--with the Jets coming off a loss, they will be ready to play.

The Miami Dolphins winning against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17-14 should give the Dolphins a chance to hang their head up high. Especially since this Thursday they are playing the Atlanta Falcons and the exciting Michael Vick. I really think that the Atlanta Falcons will give the Miami Dolphin’s defense a good exercise by doing a lot of running and chasing. This game will be at the Dolphins Stadium, and then the Dolphins will start their season at home on the 11th of September against the Denver Broncos. The best part of the Miami Dolphins schedule is that the home games should be loaded with excitement. Ricky Williams starting at HB will give them a chance at throwing the ball when Ricky Williams starts getting those long runs for first downs.

The Passing Game

There is excitement around the locker room, well it is mostly the receivers getting excited, but Chris Chambers feels the 05’ season will bring a heavier passing attack. With the addition of offensive coordinator Scott Linehan from Minnesota I would get excited too. The only problem I see is at the Quarterback position. Some one needs to step up and throw the long ball.

Keith Traylor

The Miami Dolphins upgraded their defensive line with the addition of Keith Traylor. Traylor, a 14-year veteran of the game, has had his fair share of experience in the game. Not only has he played for five different teams and assisted them greatly, Traylor also has been a part of a three Super Bowl championship teams (including the 2004 Patriots). The Patriots released him in early May and after the release of Billy Strother the Dolphins had the space to fill.

Keith Traylor was originally drafted in 1991 by the Denver Broncos in the third round. During his career up to date, Traylor has tallied 459 tackles (316 solo), including 13 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 11 forced fumbles.

Boston Stays

David Boston has been re-signed with the Miami Dolphins. Because of this, undrafted college free agent Tony Madison, who was just signed recently, will be waived by the Dolphins.

Boston did not have that productive of a year last season on account of a season-ending injury he sustained in a practice game against the Texans in early August. He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, where he was a first round choice in 1999. He then played four years with the Cards and then moved over to the Chargers. In 2004, Boston came over to the Dolphins.

In 2001, Boston was fierce being selected into the NFC Pro Bowl squad with a record of 98 passes for 1,598 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Dolphins started mining the veteran cornerback market when they had former New England Pro Bowler Ty Law visit this week after losing second-year CB Will Poole to injury. In addition to Law, Terrell Buckley has expressed interest in playing for the Dolphins again and the team could look at R.W. McQaurters if he is let go. Don't expect the Dolphins to pay a lot of money for any veteran they sign. However, the depth at cornerback is suspect. After Sam Madison, the team has Reggie Howard, Mario Edwards and rookie Travis Daniels. None of them have great recovery speed and Daniels could end up as a safety. . . .

The Dolphins are hoping that Poole will be able to recover in time to play at least part of the season. Poole tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. If he can recover in five months, he might be able to play in the second half of the season. The Dolphins are hoping for that because they want Poole, who was a possible starter before the injury, to learn the defense and so that the new coaching staff can get a better evaluation of him. . . .

Fifth-round pick LT Anthony Alabi is every bit the project the Dolphins considered him to be when they took him. Alabi is a terrific athlete, but he looks more like a tight end right now than an offensive tackle. Alabi needs to put on a good 20 pounds to be ready to handle the rigors of playing in the NFL, let alone at left tackle.

Will Poole

During minicamps, Will Poole suffered a torn ACL. This makes the possibility for the cornerback to start the season at a maybe. Poole position will be filled for the time being by Reggie Howard, Mario Edwards and rookie Travis Daniels.

Poole had his rookie year with the Dolphins during the 2004 season where he racked in 37 tackles, one sack and one kickoff return for 22 yards.

The Nick Saban era in South Florida officially kicked off as the NFL held its 70th annual Draft. In the first round, the Dolphins selected running back Ronnie Brown from Auburn University. Miami selected defensive end Matt Roth from Iowa in the second round. The Dolphins drafted linebacker Channing Crowder from the University of Florida in the third round. In the fourth round, Miami selected cornerback Travis Daniels from Louisiana State. The Dolphins drafted offensive tackle Anthony Alabi from Texas Christian in the fifth round. In the seventh round, Miami selected defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson from Michigan State.

The team likely will target the best player available with its first pick, which could be Michigan WR Braylon Edwards or one of two quarterbacks: Cal's Aaron Rodgers or Utah's Alex Smith. Though the Dolphins have a good group of receivers, new offensive coordinator Scott Linehan emphasizes throwing downfield. Getting Edwards would give Miami exceptional depth at receiver and allow it to run the three-receiver alignments Linehan prefers. Smith is a favorite of Linehan, who recruited him in college, but has to learn to play under center rather than in the shotgun. The Dolphins also have scouted former Florida State QB Adrian McPherson, who put on a show at his workout but is dogged by gambling allegations from his college days and will be a mid- to late-round pick.

If the Dolphins don't take a running back in the first round, Cal's J.J. Arrington or Florida's Ciatrick Fason could be options at No. 70. Through the rest of the draft, look for the Dolphins to rebuild an aging defense with an emphasis on linebacker, safety and tackle. Saban would like to get a linebacker/end similar to the Patriots' Mike Vrabel who would allow the team to switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3.

The draft is beginning soon and this is the first time that it will be happening under Nick Saban as new coach for the Dolphins. What are we to expect from his choices?

This is Saban’s first year participating in football on the league level. Before his newly acquired five-year contract with the Dolphins, Saban was coaching on the college level for some 26 years. Most recently, Saban was head coach for Louisiana State University.

Saban has had a very prolific career coaching college ball, only being on a losing team for 3 years of his stint as a coach. Lets hope he can do just as well acquiring us a winning team.

The biggest priority for the Dolphins is to move down in the draft. The Dolphins wouldn't mind taking a quarterback in this draft, but likely won't in the first round at No. 2 overall because there are other needs and the team doesn't pick again until the third round at No. 70 overall. The team needs an infusion of youth at defensive tackle, linebacker and could use at least a solid contender for Lamar Gordon at running back. If the team stays at the No. 2 spot and can't trade down, look for them to take the best offensive player available, possibly WR Braylon Edwards or RB Ronnie Brown.

Nick Saban

Last year, running back Ricky Williams left the Dolphins on account of failing a drug test. Not only did this cause problem for Williams, who seemingly had no problem in leaving the team, but this created a gap of $8.6 million in his contract unfulfilled.

Now, with the addition of Nick Saban as the new coach, we can look at the possibility of Williams returning. Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga is leaving the reins of control all in Saban’s hands. Huizenga looks at it like “I'll do what Nick wants to do.”

There is some ongoing hostility with Williams. For the most part, he abandoned the team and has some sort of reparations to make. But, we can only wait and see what time will reveal.

Tebucky Jones

The Miami Dolphins today signed free agent safety Tebucky Jones to a two-year contract. Jones, a seven-year NFL veteran who was a first-round draft choice of New England in 1998 (22nd overall), spent the last two seasons with New Orleans. He was released by the Saints on Tuesday.

In his NFL career, the 30-year old Jones has played in 103 regular season games, including 66 starts, and has tallied 385 tackles, six interceptions, 41 passes defensed, six fumble recoveries and four forced fumbles. With the Saints in 2004, he started all 16 games at free safety and finished third on the team with a career-high 110 tackles and an interception. The 6-2, 220-pounder spent the first five years of his career with Patriots and was a member of the New England squad that captured the Super Bowl title in 2001, when he started 12 contests. He began his career as a cornerback before being moved to free safety in 2000. He was traded to the Saints on April 15, 2003 in exchange for third- and seventh-round draft choices in 2003 and a fourth-round pick in 2004.

Jones also has made an impact on special teams throughout his career, having recorded 69 tackles, including 28 in his rookie season of 1998 with the Patriots. He also has a blocked field goal and a blocked PAT to his credit.

Jones spent the first three years of his collegiate career at Syracuse as a running back before making the switch to defensive back for his senior year of 1997. Born October 6, 1974, Jones attended New Britain (Conn.) High School.

The Dolphins have been signing some different players. Donnie Spragan, formerly part of the Denver Broncos for the last three seasons, comes to the Dolphins with a two-year contract.

Kevin Carter and the Dolphins

Coming from the University of Florida originally, Kevin Carter is joining the Miami Dolphins and coming home. Carter was released from the Titans this past February 22nd. He has signed onto Miami for a five year contract.

Despite the strong need for a left tackle, don't look for the Dolphins to pursue top free agent Jonas Jennings, which means the Dolphins may be forced to draft a left tackle or go through the scrap heap for one. Jennings wants a signing bonus of at least $10 million for a long-term contract and the Dolphins simply don't think he's worth that. Jennings, who plays for Buffalo, has done a nice job in his matchups with DE Jason Taylor in the past. However, the Dolphins are in such a precarious position against the salary cap that they can't afford to make such a huge investment in a player who is probably only above average, if that. . . .

The team cut QB Jay Fiedler, and there is no chance he will be re-signed. The Dolphins want to make a clean break so that there is no chance that his presence will be a distraction from the effort to have A.J. Feeley become as good as he can possibly be. Last season, the team was simply too split by the presence of Fiedler while Feeley was competing for the job. Fiedler had earned great respect from teammates for not only being a gritty, tough guy, but also for winning as much as he did. Even though the team wants to sign a veteran to back up and compete with Feeley, the feeling is that Fiedler would cause disruption by his mere presence. The Dolphins saved $6.4 million by letting go of Fiedler.

Marino in the Hall of Fame

Dan Marino, along with Steve Young, has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as one of the most inspired quarterbacks of all time. Both of these men were selected for their versatility on the field. Marino played all his years with the Dolphins and always kept them a powerful team. Young’s speed and accuracy won him this honor.

They were joined by Bennie Friedman and Fritz Pollard. The inductions will occur officially on August 7th in Canton, Ohio.

Can Cedric Benson become a part of the Dolphins?

A lot of controversy has spurred from the possibility of running back Cedric Benson joining the Dolphins. During his four years at the University of Texas (Go Horns!!!), Benson has provided over 1000 yards and has proved to be an imperative asset to the team.

The skepticism still remains due to Ricky Williams, former UT graduate and Dolphin. Williams joined the team and then cut his vocation with the Dolphins short in order to pursue his own spirituality.

Ricky Williams was a mentor to the up and coming Benson and now Miami has the difficulty deciding whether Benson will be as problematic. We all don’t want to go to court, right Ricky?

Nick Saban made his first official roster moves with the Dolphins on Tuesday, as the team signed eight players to "future" contracts for 2005. Of the eight, five ended the 2004 season on the Dolphins practice squad.

Those six are DE Ronald Flemons , T Tony Pape , DB Ricky Sharpe, G Jamil Soriano and LB Winston Taylor.

The other three players signed Tuesday were long-snapper William Delahoussaye, WR James Newson and DE Matt Walter. Delahoussaye was in Dolphins training camp last summer; Newson was in Dallas' camp; while Walters was with the Jets.

Incidentally, one of the two players who ended the season on the Miami practice squad but were not signed Tuesday was 2003 fifth-round pick J.R. Tolver.

I am excited to report this, because I am hoping that this is a beginning of a overhaul of this team. Saban seems to be comfortable already, but only time will tell if he is the coach that he has been made out to be. There has not been any Ricki news latley, and the fact of the matter is that even if the does come back, he will be looked down on by everyone in the league, and probably spark a controversy. So lets keep our eyes and ears open, and who knows what could happen with the Dolphins next.

Mare's 51-yard field goal wins game

When Olindo Mare kicked the winning field goal with 7 seconds left, the 20,000 fans still on hand rose and roared, pleased to avoid having to watch an overtime.

Four quarters was bad enough. In a matchup of last-place teams, the Miami Dolphins were just a little less awful than the Cleveland Browns, with Mare kicking a 51-yarder for a 10-7 victory Sunday night.

"It wasn't a pretty game for people who like to see 80 points on the board," Browns safety Earl Little said. "We knew somebody would get that one break at the end and win."

Jim Bates won in the matchup of interim coaches against Terry Robiskie. Bates improved to 3-3 since Dave Wannstedt resigned, but he'll be replaced after the season by LSU coach Nick Saban, who accepted the Miami job Saturday.

"I have built confidence being in this position that I can handle this job," said Bates, who interviewed unsuccessfully for the job. "There isn't any doubt in my mind that I can do this type of work."

The Dolphins (4-11) made it two wins in a row for the first time this season, although they hardly looked like the same team that upset defending Super Bowl champion New England last Monday.

Lee Suggs broke Jim Brown's 45-year-old Cleveland franchise record for carries with 38 for 143 yards, but the Browns (3-12) still lost their ninth game in a row. Robiskie fell to 0-4 since replacing Butch Davis.

With 1:49 left, the Dolphins took possession at their 28-yard line following a punt. A.J. Feeley moved the team 40 yards in eight plays, setting up Mare for the winner.

"A lot of times, we've seen teams quit," Bates said. "They're 4-11, and they're ready to go home. They've got their bags packed.

"This team has not quit."

Still, Miami's victory was hardly picturesque. The teams combined for six turnovers and went 3½ quarters without a point after an early 7-all tie with impressive ineptitude.

"A lot of times, we kind of stepped on our foot," Feeley said.

The Dolphins faked a field goal, tried a pooch punt instead and netted 2 yards. They had a 6½-minute drive that barely reached midfield. Tight end Randy McMichael, who has lobbied for more passes, dropped two. Feeley drilled a throw 5 yards into the chest of defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban, who was too astounded to make the interception.

The Browns lost a fumble at the Miami 2 and had a takeaway negated by a penalty. But the ugliest moment came in the third quarter, with an interception and two fumbles on the same play.

Luke McCown's deep throw was intercepted by Arturo Freeman, who fumbled. Teammate Patrick Surtain picked up the ball, then lateraled to Sam Madison, who fumbled. The Browns recovered for a net gain of 26 yards.

More comedy came three plays later, when Phil Dawson missed a 43-yard field goal when his attempt hit the right upright.

"That kind of sums up our season," Browns center Melvin Fowler said. "We haven't gotten many breaks."

With the stands more than half-empty, as they have been much of this season in Miami, Pro Player Stadium had all the atmosphere of an August exhibition game. The Dolphins struggled to take advantage of Cleveland's four turnovers, sputtering on offense against a Browns team that allowed 158 points in the past four games.

An interception by Surtain set up the game's first score, which came on an 18-yard pass from Feeley to Derrius Thompson.

Cleveland pulled even 88 seconds later. McCown was flushed out of the pocket and threw long across his body, hitting Dennis Northcutt in stride for a 58-yard score.

The Browns squandered a chance to take the lead in the second quarter when Suggs fumbled and Miami's Sammy Knight recovered at the 2.

"Both teams scored early, and we thought it was going to be a shootout," Northcutt said. "Then it was just drive and punt, drive and punt."

LSU coach decides NFL can't wait

After three days of emotional deliberations, personal and professional discussions with family members and close associates which tore Nick Saban in two directions, the Miami Dolphins have a new head coach.

Saban decided Saturday to leave his comfort zone at LSU, a university for which he has great respect and fondness, and accept the task of rebuilding the Dolphins organization. The decision came after long Thursday and Friday sessions at his home in Baton Rouge, where he weighed his future with his wife, Terry, and his agent, Jimmy Sexton.

"We've never ever taken over successful programs," said Saban, who announced his decision, after apprising university officials and his players of it, at an evening news conference in Orlando on Saturday. "We've taken challenges that were difficult, worked hard and had an effect in a positive way. That's one of the reasons I feel I can be successful in this challenge."

The contract will be for five years and is worth $4.5 million-$5 million annually. It will also provide Saban with near-absolute control over football-related decisions and allow him to help reshape the organization following a disastrous 2004 season.

He will take over in Miami after coaching LSU in its bowl game on Jan. 1. The Tigers, who won their final six games this season to finish at 9-2, will face Iowa in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando.

The following day, the Dolphins conclude their worst season since the 1960s, and their first losing season since 1988.

Saban on Wednesday was formally offered the Dolphins job and told Dolphins and school officials he might need a day or two to come to a decision. Clearly, he wanted a resolution before Christmas, when his team was scheduled to leave for its bowl game, but could not meet his original timetable because of his strong feelings for LSU.

Sexton spent much of Wednesday meeting in Fort Lauderdale with Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga discussing contract parameters. The two made what one source termed "significant progress" toward a deal, but an agreement wasn't struck. There remained some details to be hammered out and, more important, Saban needed time to examine the offer and review his own priorities. Sexton then hunkered down with Saban for nearly three days to discuss the options.

On Friday morning, Huizenga flew to Baton Rouge for another round of meetings. He had hoped to bring Saban back to Miami with him on his private plane, but the coach reiterated that he needed more time.

At no time, sources said, did LSU attempt to significantly augment Saban's contract. Two sources said that, at the outset of the process with Miami, school officials told Saban and Sexton how far they could go financially. There was never a formal counteroffer in an attempt to keep him in Baton Rouge.

There are likely to be dramatic changes now in the Dolphins organization.

Miami will hire a new team president to replace the much-respected Eddie Jones, who will retire in March, and the hiring of Saban could also end the tenure of general manager Rick Spielman, who has been a part of the search for the successor to Dave Wannstedt. It is anticipated that Saban would want to bring aboard his own general manager or personnel director to head the scouting department.

"We most certainly want to have success in an organization that has been rich in tradition and success in the past," Saban said. "[We're] going to work extremely hard to try to restore that success."

One of the deal-breakers 11 months ago, when Saban rejected the Chicago Bears head coach job, was that he was not offered control over some staffing and personnel matters. Confidants of Saban have reiterated to ESPN.com that control, particularly in terms of acquiring players, was a more critical issue to him than finances.

Saban began taking a hard look at the Miami job a year ago, when it appeared Wannstedt might be in trouble, following a second non-playoff season. A candidate for several NFL jobs since leaving the league to become head coach at Michigan State in 1994, Saban has always indicated he would return to the league only under optimum conditions.

Part of his attraction to the job was that Huizenga is regarded around the league as an owner who does not meddle in football matters, who essentially gets out of the way and lets his coach do his job.

"Your boss is always really important," Saban said. "And I was really, really impressed with Wayne Huizenga in terms of what he wants to accomplish, what his vision is for this team and what his goals are. I would like to work in partnership with people like that."

The other intriguing element for Saban is the opportunity to rebuild a football organization to his own specifications.

The Dolphins first huddled with Saban on Dec. 14, in a late-night meeting, and it was clear from the outset that he topped the Miami wish list. Teams officials also interviewed former Oakland Raiders coach Art Shell, currently a league vice president, and interim head coach Jim Bates for the position. But there was never any doubt that Saban was their man if a deal could be struck.

Saban, 53, has enjoyed great success at LSU, and leaving the school would be a difficult decision for him. As late as Tuesday morning, even before he had the Dolphins offer in hand, he told athletic director Skip Bertman that he probably faced a tough call and praised the school for its commitment to him and his family. After rebuffing the Bears advances, Saban signed a new seven-year contract, making him the highest paid college head coach in the country.

His team won the national championship in 2003 and, in five seasons in Baton Rouge, he compiled a 48-15 mark.

Following the Tigers' practice Sunday in Orlando, their first since his announcement, Saban said the team is taking his imminent departure well.

"At some point in everyone's life, they have to make some kind of career decision that affects other people, and that's how I explained it to them," Saban said. "They have managed this well -- better than I have."

LSU All-American defensive end Marcus Spears said the Tigers weren't surprised by Saban's decision.

"It's not the first time coach has had to entertain the idea of taking another job," Spears said. "I think most of the guys are happy for him. Some young guys may have concerns, but that's normal."

In stints at LSU (2000-present), Michigan State (1995-99) and Toledo (1990), Saban had a record of 91-41-1.

His previous NFL experience came as secondary coach with the Houston Oilers (1988-89) and the defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns (1991-94), where he worked on the staff of longtime friend Bill Belichick.

Jason Elam kicked a 50-yard field goal with 2:50 left Sunday to help the Broncos eke out a 20-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

Denver's Tatum Bell ran for 123 yards after replacing fumble-prone Reuben Droughns early in the game and ran for two scores, but shortly after, he left with a sprained shoulder that could end his season. That forced Droughns back into the backfield after he had fumbled twice -- losing one -- on his first four carries.

Jake Plummer threw for 219 yards and two interceptions, yet the Broncos (8-5) kept pace with Baltimore for the AFC's final wild-card spot.

But this performance couldn't have fooled anyone. The Dolphins (2-11) took this game to the wire -- not bowing out until A.J. Feeley threw incomplete on fourth down with 1:59 left -- and this version of the Broncos hardly looked like the one that will hand Mike Shanahan his first playoff victory since the 1998 Super Bowl.

Plummer was off-target all day and his two interceptions were both abominable. The first went to Jay Williams, the fourth defensive lineman to intercept him this season, and led to Miami's first touchdown. The second went to Sammy Knight on an ill-advised pass with the game tied at 17 and the Broncos driving.

Denver held after the interception and Droughns ran 21 yards to set up Elam's winning field goal.

Droughns finished with 62 yards on 18 carries to surpass the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

Bell pretty much defined Denver's day in the third quarter during two plays on the same drive. First, he made it around the corner and could have walked in untouched for a score, but slipped at the 7. Three plays later, he dropped a wide-open pass in the end zone and forced the Broncos to settle for a 20-yard field goal and a 17-14 lead.

Feeley threw for 170 yards and one touchdown, an 8-yarder to Marty Booker that gave the Dolphins an early 7-0 lead. After Denver tied it, the Dolphins went ahead again, 14-7 on an 11-yard run by Sammy Morris, who led the Dolphins with just 36 yards rushing.

``This is a coach's nightmare, going through changes during the season,'' Wannstedt said. ``When you're trying to juggle players at this point to improve your team, that's not a whole lot of fun.

Our offense has been virtually shattered with us not being able to find a replacement that is worthy enough to be put in a position of offense dominance that Ricki Williams was. I don't mean to dwell on his retirement, but it has really broken down our team both on the field and off the field. I think we have a whole lot less confidence in our Offense and its causing us to have terrible games. I really hope that going 0-3 isn't getting to us, but its tough right now for our Dolphins and I really hope we can snap out of it. Lets get out there and support our Dolphins any way possible!

Injuries and conflicts get the best of us

As many of you know, Ricki Williams quit, leaving the Dolphins in a state of shock. But not only did that hurt us but with the Injury too David Boston and Adewale Ogunleye joining up with the Bears, It doesn't help the fact that we are down an all-star running back. To further the bad news, we lost our season opener to the Titans, 7-17. We couldnt finish what we started and it ended up costing us the game. So lets see if we can get our players back in shape and settle our disputes. Lets get back in it Dolphins!

Possible Hurricane threats don't hold us back

After Hurricane Frances threats this week,The game just got under way and I would like to put the past 2 games behind us and focus on future. Also in the past week , talks about Ricki Williams returning after last couple of months' numerous failed attempts to resolve his drug issue resulting in his early retirement before getting suspended. Although Ricki is an amazing player, after what he has put the team through just to keep him, it might be a better idea to let some other team deal with his drug problems. As of right now, the game against the Saints is tied at 7, lets hope we can get a win and off and break even for this hectic pre-season

With the win against the Jags, you never know how things could go. Ofcourse with the loss of Ricki Williams , everyone believed that we ahd to rely on Williams to do everything for us, but now since he is gone, it seems as if we have learned to not rely on our running game as much. As for the fact of no having him, it hurts us nonetheless but Im hoping we can pick up a few new players before the season starts and get passed this. I really hope we can have a great season, but with the chaos we have been having , we need to get it done in a timely fashion or before we know it season will start and we will be stuck without a running back and a wide reciever... but as for now we can onyl cheer hard and hope for the best. Now lets get out there and get em Dolphins!

Im sure every football fan in America has heard of the rescent ordeal involving Ricki Williams. He basically quit on his own terms not thinking about anyone else. Anyways, the Dolphins are having trouble replacing him aswell as deciding who they are going to put as recievers. With all the confusion , I believe it will be hard to have any Superbowl hopes this year( even though i wish it weren't true.) We will have to see how big of a problem missing Mr. Williams will have on the team in the preseason game against Jacksonville. Even though the odds aren't good, we need to still have faith in the Dolphins. Go Dolphins, Beat the Jags!
